Renting a car in Montenegro is fairly inexpensive, so you ‘ll be saving lots of time and seeing lots of places if you decide on traveling by car. Fuel is also not that expensive. As a tip, try choosing a smaller car. Why? The roads can be very narrow in Montenegro, especially when visiting the places below!
Drive to Skadar National Park from Podgorica
Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro, but you will hear most travelers say it’s not worth staying there for that long. Don’t get us wrong, its river, bridges and clock tower are worth a sight, but that’s about it.
On the other hand, not far from Podgorica, is Skadar National Park. It’s a 39km drive from Podgorica to Skadar Lake, so renting a car should get you there fast.
This Park is home to Lake Skadar and it’s something not to be missed. The natural beauty of Montenegro can be summed up in this spectacular view. The lake is the largest freshwater body in the Balkans, surrounded by lush greenery and mountain peaks.
Sakadar National Park is the place to hike, go on a boat ride, or simply wonder around.
If you want to have the best views of Skadar National Park, you should drive from Virpazar to Rijeka Crnojevica. This road will unveil one of the best moments of your Montenegro itinerary. You will get to see Rijeka Crnojevica River just curve around the Green Pyramid Hill. And what a sight will that be!
Reach Budva in Just 20 Minutes
After seeing the National Park, head straight to Budva. This town has an old medieval feeling to it, and it’s one of the most loved tourist destinations in Montenegro.
Hidden inside ancient Venetians walls, you would never guess that this historical place is actually home to a stunning nightlife and sandy beaches.
Located right on the shore of the Adriatic sea, Budva is also called “Montenegrin Miami” and we guess you already kind of know why. Sun soaked beaches, animated clubs, beautiful scenery and great people is what got this place in our Montenegro itinerary.
Having a rented car that can get you places will save you time and money, since you won’t be looking for a taxi or get frustrated when you don’t find one free. This is because this town can get quite crowded with tourist swarming all around the place.
Oh, and did we forget to mention that if you have a rented car, you can easily reach island Sveti Stefan? It’s definitely worth a 15 minutes trip just to see the beaches!
Roman History – Drive to Kotor
Kotor is just 23km away from Budva, and this old city will certainly make you feel the chill of the Romans!
Located in the region of Dalmatia, this town has one of the most spectacular historical architecture. With winding roads, fortified walls and Romanesque vibe, it’s no wonder we have it listed in our Montenegro itinerary.
Having a rented car to drive through Kotor can be one of the best choices you’ve made. Simply because you can drive through the city and stop to admire this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Reach Durmitor National Park
After spending a day or two in Kotor, pack your bags, start your engine and drive your rented car to Durmitor National Park. You’ll be driving for about two and a half hours (166 Km), but that’s better than over 4h with a bus.
Durmitor National Park means breathtaking scenery, as this park was formed by glaciers. The whole place is crossed by rivers and underground streams. It’s the largest national park in Montenegro and also included in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
You will find yourself driving on a spectacular road, while canyons unveil while rivers gently flow. This is one of the most dynamic places to explore nature. You can hike, embark on a boat, climb the high peaks or simply go backpacking. It’s an experience you will remember, we guarantee it!
Having a Montenegro itinerary setup before embarking on a journey is something to consider. Also, while planning your trip, you should also think about renting a car. Covering long distances with a rented car will save you time, money and having bad experiences. Trust us when we say that you would rather rent a car from a reputable company, then spend most of your time on a bus!
